Arthritis Q & A

Arthritis is a chronic joint disease. While there’s over 100 different types of arthritis, the most common types that cause pain and interfere with mobility include:

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a condition where the protective cartilage at the end of your bones wears out and breaks down, allowing bones to rub together. This rubbing creates friction that leads to chronic pain and limitations in mobility.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory type of arthritis that results from an autoimmune disorder. The immune system mistakenly attacks healthy joint tissue, leading to chronic inflammation, irritation, and pain.
Arthritis symptoms can start gradually and get worse over time. Irritation and inflammation in the joint lead to chronic pain and other symptoms:

• Redness
• Stiffness
• Limited flexibility
• Loss of range of motion

If left untreated, arthritis can cause permanent deformities in the joint that results in disability and chronic pain.

When over-the-counter medications aren’t enough to control your arthritis pain and symptoms, schedule an evaluation with Dr. Ali at Complete Pain & Spine Institute as soon as possible.
Diagnosing arthritis starts with a review of your personal and family medical history and a physical exam of the affected joint. Dr. Ali assesses the joint, looking for the redness, swelling, and warmth that are common with arthritis. He may also request imaging tests, like X-rays, to evaluate the extent of your joint damage.

In some cases, you may also need blood testing to rule out infections in the joint that may be causing your symptoms.

Once he confirms your pain relates to arthritis, Dr. Ali creates a treatment plan that focuses on relieving your pain and increasing the function of your joint.
Your treatment plan for arthritis depends on the type of arthritis you have and its severity. Initially, treating mild arthritis pain involves over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatories.

You may also benefit from physical therapy and at-home exercises to strengthen the muscles that support your joints.

Dr. Ali also specializes in viscosupplementation treatment for knee arthritis. This minimally invasive procedure involves injections of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance already in your body, to lubricate and cushion the knee joint to reduce friction and pain.

If you have chronic joint pain and need solutions to improve your mobility, schedule an evaluation at Complete Pain & Spine Institute today online or by calling the office.
